Microsoft is offering voluntary exit packages to approximately 60,000 employees across India, the US, the UK and Canada as the technology giant continues investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI). The programme covers around 27% of Microsoft’s global workforce, which stood at approximately 223,000 employees in June 2026.
Who Is Eligible for Microsoft’s Exit Package?
The Voluntary Exit Offer is available to eligible employees at level 70 and below in participating teams. However, not every employee or department qualifies. Some teams, including certain data centre, sales and marketing groups, are excluded.
Eligible employees will receive details about their individual offers, including financial support and career-transition resources. In India, reports indicate that eligible employees have until 1 December 2026 to decide whether to accept the offer.

Why Is Microsoft Offering Exit Packages?
Microsoft is expanding its AI infrastructure and services while looking for ways to manage operating costs. The company has forecast substantial spending on AI infrastructure, including data centres and computing chips. The voluntary exit programme gives eligible employees an option to leave while allowing participating teams to adjust their workforce.
Important: This is a voluntary exit programme, not a confirmed layoff of 60,000 employees. The actual number of employees who leave will depend on how many eligible workers accept the offer.
